What's a bonobo?

Do you know about bonobos?

"Genius Ape: Kanzi" Amazing, the Intelligence of Apes [NHK] - The Miraculous Bonobo, Kanzi 3rd night

This is the third night of "The Miracle of Bonobo, Kanzi." Bonobos and humans share numerous similarities, and I believe there are many aspects that humans could learn from them.

Let's continue with the introduction of the special program aired on Japan's national broadcaster NHK more than 30 years ago in 1993, titled "Genius Monkey Kanzi-kun: Astonishing Intelligence of Primate Kin." This time, I've attempted to write it in the style of a popular American blogger?! (^^;)

Introducing an Unbelievable Tale

Hello, everyone! It's PetPal here! Tonight, I've got an incredible story that will surely shake your world and leave you in awe. We often dive deep into the realm of animal intelligence, but let me tell you, this is a story you can't afford to miss. So, fasten your seatbelts, because we're about to embark on a journey with the genius bonobo, Kanzi! 🦍

1. Imagine

📸 Just imagine this: a mountain of hundreds of snapshots. The production team carefully selected 16 shots and presented them to the esteemed Dr. Sue. But here's the catch. The more photos there are, the tougher it becomes to find the perfect one.
🔍 Our star player, Kanzi, is no ordinary ape. Dr. Sue has a mission to decipher his ingenious mind, and she's got a trick up her sleeve.
📸 The spotlight is on Kanzi, and he's examining the snapshots. This humanoid isn't backing down. He's vibing with Dr. Sue's words, expertly curating visuals. But here's the million-dollar question—who's English is he picking up?
🎧 In the test, different photos from before are used, and the questioner changes too. This primate sets up his own headphones. And guess what? The torch of questioning is passed to another lucky soul for some Q&A action.
📸 This is the photo of the juice bottle—and he nailed it! I mean, folks, this is a breathtaking sight! This experiment is the real deal. Kanzi has crammed over a thousand English words into his noggin. And hold onto your hats—he's picked these words up in the course of his everyday life with Dr. Sue, without anyone even noticing. No training needed; he's just soaking it all in.

2. A World Full of Love

🎙 Flashback to 13 years ago when Kanzi was a newborn. But hold onto your reins, folks!
Who's that taking Kanzi for a spin? It's not his mom, dear reader. Allow me to introduce Matata, the golden-hearted bonobo imported all the way from Africa for this grand experiment.
🤗 Kanzi's actual mother makes an appearance. But wait! We're entering some strange territory here. Kanzi's making gestures like he wants to be where Matata is.
🤝 Matata extends a hand, a symphony of goodwill. In the wild, bonobos swap babies and care for them as if there's no tomorrow, regardless of biological kinship. Matata's affection? It's likely a side effect of this love-filled society. And Kanzi grew up by her side.
🗣 Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh steps up to the mic: "We tried tirelessly to teach Matata words, but there were limitations. When we worked with Matata, Kanzi was right there, but we didn't teach him anything, thinking he was too young to learn."
💥 But hold onto your seats, folks. The story thickens as Kanzi hits 2 and a half years old. (Cont'd)

3. Kanzi's Linguistic Artistry

💬 [Story] Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh:
"Imagine this: Kanzi suddenly taps the keyboard lightly and starts an impromptu game of apple chase. Let that sink in. The observant virtuoso Kanzi picks up the keyboard, taps away, and signals his intent by saying, 'Hey, throw the apple. Let's play chase with it!' He goes to grab the apple, runs around the room with a smile on his face, and holds it up. But wait, there's more. So, hold onto your hats.
While we were teaching Kanzi's mother, he was immersed in the world of linguistic artistry. He learned like a pint-sized prodigious human—absorbing, eavesdropping, analyzing actions, and self-learning. You see, this isn't your average simian scenario. Unlike apes that learned language through training, Kanzi decided to blaze his own trail.
As life's chapters kept evolving, he embarked on a journey to conquer vocabulary, absorbing not just individual words but entire paragraphs. Yes, long sentences became his playground, a testament to his linguistic prowess and unwavering commitment to communication."

The above was sent to you by Pet Pal. ...So that's it.
That's all for today's tweet. Did I sound like a popular American blogger? I hope you enjoyed it! (;^_^A
Kanzi's growth was supported by the love of his mother, Matata, Dr. Sue, and many others.
His amazing abilities continue to amaze and impress me.
The next issue will finally be the final one. What will be the fate of Mr. Kanzi and Dr. Sue? Please stay tuned (lol).
Thank you for watching until the end.
